The Y70 Touch boast a 2.5GHz Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor, the same quad-core CPU used in the Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro, but with twice the memory allotment at 16GB of RAM. Lenovo covers the Y70 Touch with a one-year warranty that includes free depot and carry-in repair.

The system also comes with Nvidia's GeForce Experience, which includes settings and driver controls, along with ShadowPlay, for recording and streaming video during gameplay, GameStream, for use with the Nvidia Shield, and Battery Boost, which optimizes gameplay and battery life for gaming away from a power outlet.

Lenovo includes several proprietary apps and tools, for everything from security (VeriFace Pro facial recognition login) to entertainment (Red Karaoke). You'll also find it preinstalled with several apps, like Amazon Kindle Reader, Evernote Touch, cloud storage through Hightail (for Lenovo), and Zinio Reader, along with a shopping link for Ebay. In addition to Windows 8.1, the Y70 Touch comes with a free 30-day trial of McAfee LiveSafe Internet Security and a similar trial for new buyers of Microsoft Office 365. The laptop is also equipped with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless connectivity.įor storage, Lenovo has outfitted the system with a solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD) combining a 1TB, 5,400rpm hard drive with 8GB of solid-state storage to boost performance. On the right are a single USB 2.0 port, an SD card slot, a headset jack, and S/PDIF output for surround sound. On the left are two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI-out port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. Centered beneath the space bar is a large clickpad, which offers Windows 8 gesture support, but isn't ideal for actual gaming.Īlong the sides of the laptop are several connections and ports. It's still very usable, but I would have preferred wider spacing. Despite the larger dimensions of the 17-inch system, there's still no space between the standard keys and the numeric pad, but there is now a lot of empty space on either side of the keyboard. The keyboard uses the same AccuType design seen on the Lenovo Y50 Touch, complete with red backlighting and sculpted keycaps for a comfortable typing feel.

When tested with the new Terminator Genisys movie trailer in 1080p, the picture looked great even in darker shots, and the sound was clear, whether rumbling with explosions, the new version of "I'd Love To Change the World," or Arnold's "I'll be back." The sound is also good with JBL speakers, a built-in subwoofer, and Dolby software enhancement.
The picture quality is quite good, with sharp details, accurate colors, and wide viewing angles. Touch is still a relatively rare offering in gaming systems, but it's a welcome addition-Windows 8.1 is much more navigable and intuitive with a touch screen. The 17.3-inch display has 1,920-by- 1,080 resolution and 10-point touch support. It has brushed aluminum on the lid and underside of the chassis and matte, soft-touch paint on the palm rest.

That said, it's a runway model compared with beefier systems like the Digital Storm Krypton, which is nearly a full inch thicker and weighs more than 9 pounds. It's not a slim as the 0.85-inch thick, 5.8-pound Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro. It's relatively slim for a gaming system, measuring 1.02 by 16.64 by 11.44 inches (HWD), and weighing 7.5 pounds, but I'd stop short of calling it an ultraportable.
The 17-inch Lenovo Y70 Touch is an elegant-looking gaming laptop priced for those looking to get into mobile PC gaming without the sort of price tag that requires selling a kidney. The Lenovo Y70 Touch ($1,499.99 as tested) has the same attractive styling seen on the smaller Lenovo Y50 Touch, and offers a large-screened alternative to the Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro (VN7-591G-75S2), our Editors' Choice for entry-level gaming laptops.

Lenovo is still a relative newcomer in the world of gaming systems, but the company has proven it knows how to deliver a solid entry-level gaming laptop.
